Transferring Your Property Tax Base

Dear Monica: I bought a property last year and just got my tax bill, which was very high. I was expecting to be taxed the same as I was on the house I sold,  not at the new rate.  How can I resolve this?  Gale C.

Dear Gale: In order to move your property tax base from your former property to a new one, you must be at least 55 years of age and file BOE(Board of Equalization) Form 19 B within three years from the date the replacement property is purchased.  You can do this up to three times.   Since you are late filing this form, you will have to pay at least the first installment of the new bill.  Once the transfer is approved you will be reimbursed for any overpayment.
