Dear Monica: I have lived in my house for many years and have cared for it but am suddenly aware of termite damage in a few places. How could I have avoided this? Berniece J.
Dear Berniece: We live in our houses and think all is well and then suddenly we become aware of issues that we weren’t paying attention to like termites. The best way to avoid these surprises is to maintain a checklist. Every few years it is prudent to have a pest inspection which includes fungus and dry rot as well as termites. Inspect the roof too, as well as the plumbing, furnace/AC, electrical, painting, flooring and all of the components. There are companies that will do this for you if this is more convenient. Check your insurance policy too to be sure you have the right coverage.
