Dear Monica: We all know that housing costs are high in the Bay Area, but how do high prices affect those being recruited to this area?  Brian G.

Dear Brian: Many in this area cannot buy a home even though they have good jobs and salaries.  As a result, many rent or, in some cases, leave the area.  High prices too can keep people from taking a job here, depending on the circumstances.    Many are coming from places that have good schools and housing and forces them to decide not only about the job but about the quality of life they would be giving up.  Companies and academic institutions know this and often offer financial help to their recruits specifically for housing. 

This lack of affordability is an issue that is getting worse.  Cities are trying to provide more housing which will take time but is a move in the right direction.
